Montessori Philosophy

Montessori School of Moscow utilizes the philosophy, methods and materials developed by Dr. Maria Montessori. "A child’s work,” Dr. Montessori wrote, “is to create the man he will become. An adult works to perfect his environment, but a child works to perfect himself.”

The Montessori Method, based on careful observation of and respect for the natural development of the child, has been used in schools around the world for more than 100 years. The theory behind Montessori education is simple: Children want to learn. From birth to maturity, the child lives in what appears to be a chaotic world. He or she gradually establishes order by learning to distinguish the senses and develop their inner resources.  The child who accomplishes this becomes a confident, self-assured learner.

The Montessori approach recognizes that a child is more responsive to certain learning experiences at particular times or “sensitive periods.” Careful observation allows the Montessori-trained teacher to recognize these sensitive periods when a child is ready for a new learning experience. The teacher can then direct the child toward materials that will satisfy his developmental needs. Through their work, the children develop concentration, motivation, independence, persistence, and discipline. Within this framework of order, the children progress at their own pace and rhythm, according to their individual capabilities, during the crucial years of development. The Montessori environment teaches children a positive, "I can do it" attitude that will ensure their future success in all aspects of their life.
